3 Mindsets That Break The Mold In Music

by Cari Cole

I recently gave a teleclass on the 3 Musician Mindsets That Break the Mold, Attract Super Fans and Garner A-List Industry Praise. It was the first free training of 2015 and I didn’t post a replay because there was a special contest attached to it and I only wanted people who could be on the call to be a part of it.

But it was such good content, I can’t let it rest behind doors. So I wanted to post a blog about it and make the training call available as well.

Opt in here to get the recording of 3 Musician Mindsets That Break the Mold, Attract Super Fans and Garner A-List Industry Praise Teleclass.

Here’s the nutshell of what I taught on that class.

Creating real notable results as a music artist today is a bit tricky. There is no one right path to follow, and following generic advice can hurt not help. Plus the fact that even if you’re smart and resourceful it doesn’t mean you aren’t missing key things that are sabotaging your career or stepping on the occasional landmines because you are too busy putting out fires like most solo-preneurs.

But the biggest thing across the board that I see snagging artists is the intangible, under the surface, and hardest to detect, making it the toughest to catch ~ especially to you. And it’s probably the quickest to turn around once you see it.

The way you think about, plan for, and even expect your career to go, makes a huge impact on what happens. What you believe or anticipate can make you or break you. It’s true for any solo-preneur. Plus, your mindset can be the toughest stuff of all to change.

Here’s a quick list of how to straighten yourself out on the inside.

3 Mindsets that Break the Mold in Music:

1. Confidence

Sam Smith said when he won his 4 Grammy’s that it was only when he started being himself that everything started flowing. That’s the root of real confidence in music. It’s the confident courage to BE YOURSELF.

2. Clarity

Clarity is what drives an artist’s career. Clarity about who you are, what you have to offer, where you are going, what you have to say, how you want it said. You can never have too much clarity. These two quotes kinda say it all:

“It’s up to the artist to use language that can be understood, not hide it in some private code. Obscurity is usually the refuge of incompetence.” Robert A. Heinlein, Stranger in a Strange Land

“That’s been one of my mantras — focus and simplicity. Simple can be harder than complex; you have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple.” Steve Jobs

3. Conviction

What studies have found with Olympic athletes is that: Being mentally prepared is just as important as being physically prepared. Do you waffle with your conviction? Do you go back and forth like a yo-yo, one day feeling strong about your music, and the next week wondering if you are crazy/mad/insane to do this? Well, here’s the real truth I posted on Twitter last week:

tweeter

Don’t dawdle – give your music the conviction it deserves.

“Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes… The ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules… You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… They push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.” Steve Jobs

Now go make the music that you want to hear and settle at nothing less.

Mama Lion loves you and believes in YOU. Now get to work. And don’t hope for it more than you work for it.

Developing your craft+music career alone is a struggle. There’s a better way: http://bit.ly/1xhnMEB
