Want to Make Your Fans Obsessed With Your Music?

You’ve been trying to grow your following for a while now, and despite being on every platform known to man (Facebook. Instagram. Twitter. YouTube. Periscope. Snapchat—and the list goes on), you can’t seem to make any significant headway.

Not to mention, no one like a manager or serious booking agent has taken any interest either.

It must be because you don’t understand marketing. You need more followers, right?

Wrong, darling. That’s not what gets the brass ring. But no worries, Mama’s gonna (lovingly) set you straight 😉

There are three things more important than being a good marketer, and that, my love, is unflinchingly knowing who you are enough to take a firm stand, an A list catalog and a music biz savvy.

Mama interviewed music manager Emily White – early manager for Amanda Palmer (the biggest independent artist out there operating without a label) – Emily was the one who got Amanda’s career going – when she was just fresh out of Northeastern University’s music biz program, and this is what she had to say:

“What I’m looking for is an artist who’s proactive, who has their shit together. Who has great music, and a great live performance. Who knows the industry and has made some connections, but needs to get in deeper. An artist who works just as hard as I do. Because we have to be a team. It isn’t like the old model, where the manager comes and does everything and handles your life, your ups and downs and all of those things.”

So here’s why this is good news for you and your music.

Because if you do those things right, you have a fighting chance. Your sound and your commitment are all in your control. You don’t need anyone else to make it happen. ::Queue rockstar stance::

Developing your sound is all about submerging within to uncover the layers and uniqueness of you. Your voice, your message, your songs, your sonic vision. What makes it special, what makes it stand out in the crowded music space, and get stuck in your audience’s heads for days on end.

That takes commitment. Commitment to YOU. Your craft. Your musicianship. Your songs. Your music business knowledge. Your willingness to show up and put yourself out there. Your perspective (we all know success is 99.9% an inside game.) Your health, because if you aren’t taking care of YOU, it all suffers). All of it.

All great artists go through it. They have to sort through who they think they are, only to find who they really are. They have to sacrifice the music they think they should make to make the music they want to hear – the music they must make. 4 time Grammy winning recording artist Sam Smith went through this very thing. He had the team, the money, the label – everything an artist wishes for—and he still couldn’t make it —- until he did one thing. Fired everybody and made the music that was in his soul.

Sam Smith didn’t find his genius until he stopped trying to make music for the industry and started making the music that he wanted to hear – the music only he could make. A record about being lonely, gay, and single in London. His heart was kind of – well – breaking. And he wrote about it. He didn’t cave to writing “hits”, he went inside and wrote his truth. This took a lot of courage and a big risk, because he didn’t know for sure if he was doing the right thing. He just got so fed up and was so sick and tired of making music that he hated, that he couldn’t do anything else. The result of that decision earned him 4 Grammys, Billboard success, and songs that went instantly viral on the airwaves. All because he had the courage to follow his inner voice and make the music he had to make.

The Takeaway: Without courage and commitment —heart, mind, body, and soul—you won’t find who you really are and reach your potential. And you can’t expect anyone to go nuts over something that isn’t really you. Not really.

So here’s 2 practical Mama Lion action steps to get yourself in motion…

1. Set aside two music committed activities every day. One about courage and one about commitment. One could be vocalizing or songwriting craft, or working on your live performance and message. And one could be about speaking your mind, writing without editing, or being bolder in your message. These two daily habits alone will strengthen your artistry in ways that will help you stand out – like Sam.

2. Make a 90 day plan. Set two goals. A music goal and a commitment goal. Your music goal could be to sharpen your musicianship skills (your voice, your piano or guitar playing) and two could be your inner resolve that no matter what happens, you want to become a great musician one day that strangers are touched by. Identify the small tasks and steps you can take every day to reach those two goals. This will move you towards your goal of becoming that great musician who is waiting to be revealed.
